Mesut Özil Retired From National Team Because of Racism

On 23rd July 2018, shortly after the 2018 Russia World Cup, the great Germany football player, Mesut Özil posted a statement on social media saying “It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at international level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect.” By this statement, Özil pronounce his retirement from Germany national football team. As Özil said, this consequence comes from several events happening after his picture with Turkey President Erdogan such as unreal report from medias, racial discrimination in DFB against Özil whose root of his ancestors is Turks, renouncement from his partner, unfair criticism and being for the fault for the poor performance of the national team in Russia

Özil has met Erdogan in May who were preparing for the presidential election during a charitable and educational event. However, medias portrayed it as a political propaganda. Some German started to abuse this Turkish-German footballer with hate mails, threatening calls and comment on social media. Except for these bad words from common people, official also shows their racial discrimination. “I was called by Bernd Holzhauer (a German politician) a ‘goat f*ker’ because of my picture with President Erdogan and my Turkish background.” Özil states “Further more, Werner Steer (Chief of German Theatre) told me to ‘piss off to Anatolia ’, a place in turkey where many immigrants are based ”

DFB president Reinhard Grindel was accused of mistreating this arguable issue and irresponsibility for the low rank in Russia by Özil. “Whilst I attempted to explain to Grindel my heritage ancestry and therefore the reason behind the photo, he was far more interested in speaking about his own political views and belittling my opinion.” Özil also reprimand that “I will no longer stand for being a scapegoat for his incompetence and inability to do his job properly” and “In the eyes of Grindel and his supporters, I am German when we win, but I am an immigrant when we lose”.

Racial discrimination should never happen anywhere, especially in such a teamwork as football. No team can win a match if everyone in the team doesn’t know how to cooperate. A good cooperation is based on mutual respect and help rather than discrimination. Obviously FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) knows how destructive the racism is, therefore the organization advocate the slogan ”Say No To Racism” and use a three-step procedure in case of discriminatory incidents and also deploy anti-discrimination observers at all matches organized by FIFA. DFB and Germany medias should be shameful on their behaviors against Mesut Özil, one of the most eminent players in national team who has his debut in 2009 and work hard for these years.

Mesut Özil was a “German Football Ambassador” in 2015 and won the champion of the 2014 Brazil World cup as main force of the team. He has participated in consecutive 26 matches at international level as starting player. However, he would not wear Germany national football shirt anymore.
